Pawan's Career

Pawan Kalyan entered Telugu movie industry with "Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi" as Kalyan Babu. His approach towards film making and his taste are most appreciated. Though his first film did not do well at the box office, Pawan Kalyan was noticed for his expertise in Martial Arts.

For showing his martial arts talent in movie Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi Andhra Pradesh's Ex-Chief minister Nara Chandra Babu Naidu entitled him the name 'Pawan' by which be became popular in the Telugu film industry. Pawan's second movie Gokulamlo Sita failed at box-office but his next movie Suswagatham fared well. He tasted his first success with Tholi Prema (1998), which set standards in the industry and became a paradigm for youth oriented films. The movie marked a milestone in Pawan's career and he was recognised by the audiences. His next two flicks Thammudu and Badri were blockbusters. Kushi (2001), broke box office records as it went on to gross 20 crores.

Pawan made his directional debut with Johnny, for which he travelled to Japan to get trained in martial art Akido. Renu Desai and himself cast as lead actors, the film was a disaster at the boxoffice. Gudumba Shankar (2001), for which Pawan contributed screenplay and other artistic skills was seen as a good family entertainer despite not living up to the box office expectations. Balu (2005) by Vyjayanthi Films didn't fare well either. His next movie Bangaram failed too. Annavaram (2006) fared better than his previous two.

Jalsa (2008), is the most widely released south Indian picture ever (approximately 1000 theatres worldwide). It is the first film in telugu to collect more than 42 crores in first fifty days of its release.Jalsa also completed 50 days in 282 centres and celebrated 100 days in 85 centers . [3].

It is surprising that a hero, who was surviving in the industry with a heavy image without any hits to his credit for six long years and is living on the image which he earned long ago. If it was some other hero, the people would have easily forgot him and his name. However, the Power Star's business stamina is increasing with each and every movie. It an open fact that a movie which was a hit would collect good revenues, but what about Pawan Kalyan's movies? After a disaster like 'Johnny', Pawan Kalyan featured in 'Gudumba Shankar' which was reportedly sold out for Rs 15 crores. His next film Balu was also reportedly sold out for Rs 18 crores. It is well aware that both the movies were disappointing, but the revenues of the films are not that bad and collected over 80 per cent of the investment, which is abnormal for any other flop movie of other artistes. That credit was once held by Chiranjeevi, whose flop movies also collected good revenues, equally with the hit movies of other heroes.

This had kept him on a high pedestal for decades. Pawan Kalyan is also lucky to maintain, must be due to the heritage. His 'Bangaram' movie was sold for almost Rs 20 crores. A leading magazine of India like 'News Today' claimed that 'Bangaram' earned Rs 4 crore profit to its buyers, but the film is known as a flop among the common audiences. It is further surprising that some of the hit films of other heroes also failed to collect such a good revenues of the flops of Pawan Kalyan.

At a time the other heroes are trying to rewrite the history with hit movies, Pawan Kalyan is doing the same with flops. Though the movies disappointed the film lovers, Pawan Kalyan proved that he is an upper hand than other heroes' hit movies due to their good business. For that matter his latest flick 'Annavaram' was also sold at Rs 23 crores and it's a breakeven in most of the areas and 90 per cent of the investment of buyers was recovered everywhere. It appears that the Andhra people are crazy over his movies whether his film is interesting or not.
